THE PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES ARE NATIONAL LEAGUE CHAMPIONS.
Holy Shit. The last time this happened I was 1o and didn't understand the concept of them losing. Now I'm 25 and just refuse to accept it this time.
Thinking back to all those missed wild card seasons, the Marlins winning 2 championships, the near misses from the early part of the decade, the meaningless Septembers, just really makes me want to cry.
Then Jimmy Rollins last season mixed it up. "We are the team to beat." WHAT??? Philly teams, especially this one don't do that. Why on earth would you poke the bear? The Mets have a ton of talent and we're the Phillies. And throughout the season they kept it close.
Then its mid-September. 7 out. There's only 17 games to play. EVERYONE in Philly was thinking Wildcard. Well everyone that was on the team that is.
And then the amazing happened.
The Phillies turn it on and the Mets did what they did. I freaked. The Phillies don't 1) make the playoffs 2) win the division 3) win the division by getting hot at the exact moment they had to.
We had the Rockies in round 1. The hottest team in baseball. But we didn't care, meaningful October baseball was here. Besides Colorado really wasn't that good, they just got hot. We have Cole Train Hamels. And the maybe MVP of Rollins. And 2006 MVP Ryan Howard. And Chase 5-tools Utley. We can't lose. The best part, our last Phillies postseason memory wouldn't be Joe Carter. Everything was on our side.
Then they swept us. And that was it.
Seeing every Philly team over the last 15 years lose in the playoffs is never fun. And you really never get to used to it. Maybe it's because no matter what you really are expecting your team to win. Even when you know it's not going to happen you always have that hope at least until it's officially gone.
This year they had swagger that you only get from making the playoffs last year. And with a slightly better team we all knew we were headed for bigger and better things.
This season was a lot better and a lot more fun knowing that the world might not actually fall apart if a Philadelphia team wins something. And everyone knew when this showed up
the Phils were going to be a force to reckon with.
When the Phillies won the division nobody was scared of the Brewers- that was us last year, just happy to be there.
The Dodgers- we were worried about but knew we had the better team. Thanks to Matt Stairs, Shane Victorino, Cole Hamels and the bat of Brett Myers, the series was over in 5.
Now we have to wait for the next opponent. Which is an altogether insane request.
Congrats on beating your opponent, now wait a few days find out whom and where you play games 1 and 2.
Just know AL team, we don't fear you.
Also, if I drop the 425 bucks for a horrible seat to watch game 3 of World Series at the stadium of my favorite baseball team, and they lose someone with a Red Sox/Rays hat will be murdered.
Or maybe I'll just go to a bar and watch the game with a bunch of drunk girls.
